1 . I n t r o d u c t i o n R e c e n t p r o g r e s s i n t h e s t u d y o f b o t h a b s o r p t i v e a n d d i s p e r s i v e b i s t a b i l i t y i n l a s e r d i o d e s (LDs) i s r e v i e w e d / I / . T h e m o s t d i s t i n c t i v e f e a t u r e o f b i s t a b l e LDs i s t h a t t h e y h a v e o p t i c a l g a i n . O p t i c a l g a i n r e s u l t s i n a d v a n t a g e s such as l o w switching o p t i c a l p o w e r , high ON-OFF r a t i o , a n d l a r g e f a n o u t . The f i r s t s t a g e i n t h e s t u d y o f o p t i c a l b i s t a b l e LDs s t a r t e d i n 1 9 6 4 w i t h t h e t a n d e m t y p e LD p r o p o s e d b y L a s h e r / 2 / . B a s e d u p o n t h e a d v a n c e d s e m i c o n d u c t o r l a s e r t e c h n o l o g y d e v e l o p e d f o r o p t i c a l f i b e r c o m m u n i c a t i o n s , t h e s e c o n d s t a g e o f b i s t a b l e LD s t u d y b e g a n i n 1 9 8 1 b y K a w a g u c h i a n d I w a n e / 3 / a n d H a r d e r e t a l . 1 3 1 . Optical bistability that is due to mutual self-action of counterpropagating beams of light.

A new kind of optical bistability is discussed that is based on mutual self-action of light beams in a nonlinear medium. In particular, fundamentally new devices are proposed that use two counterpropagating incident beams and no reflection feedback. Self-focusing (or self-defocusing) and self-bending provide bistability with positive or negative nonlinearity.
